The Minneapolis Police Department must start respecting the First Amendment rights of protestors and journalists if a new consent decree between the city and the U.S. Department of Justice is approved by a federal judge.
The agreement seeks to give the city additional tools and clarity to build back trust within the community, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said Monday in a press conference at the federal courthouse in Minneapolis.
The decree, which closely mirrors a similar agreement the city has with the state of Minnesota, hinges on buy-in from the Minneapolis Police Department and its officers, in addition to strong community partnerships and accountability for elected leaders, according to Frey.
