Filling the reporting gaps in San Benito County

BenitoLink executive director Leslie David discusses the challenges and rewards of delivering vital local news on a tight budget


As nearby daily newspapers retreated from covering the small cities, towns and rural areas of San Benito County, residents lost coverage of local government and community events. A series of listening sessions held over two years revealed a great need for local coverage of government officials and activities and also a sense of lost community from the lack of coverage.

BenitoLink arose as a non-profit digital news outlet to respond to residents’ needs. It has continued to grow for a dozen years while closely managing a tight budget. Executive Director Leslie David highlighted what the organization has learned along the way in a Q&A with the 2023 State of Local News Report’s George Stanley.
