A former senior executive at Google LLC is joining a local Canadian publisher, Village Media Inc., as chair of its board of directors.

Richard Gingras was Google’s global vice-president for news for several years before stepping back to a senior adviser position at the tech giant.

Village Media, which is based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, owns and operates 26 local news sites in Ontario and five other news-related sites. It also licences its publishing platform to another 120 publications across Canada and the United States.
