Gannett’s headcount plunged 24% last year

The number of total employees at the nation’s largest newspaper owner fell 24% last year, and is now down by nearly half from the most recent reported headcount just before the 2019 merger which created the company.

According to the annual report filed by Gannett Inc. (NYSE: GCI) late last week, the company employed 13,800 employees in the U.S. as of Dec. 31, 2021. That’s 4,300 fewer employees than it reported in its last annual report.
