Hannah Knowles named a national political reporter at The Washington Post

Hannah has already distinguished herself as a natural campaign reporter while filling in on the team in recent weeks, writing with speed, sweep and precision. She documented Pennsylvania Democrats' private worries about John Fetterman's Senate campaign; wrote a high-altitude primary night story about Democratic divisions over crime; and reported with authority on races from Alaska to California and elsewhere.

Hannah comes to National from the General Assignment team, where she is known for her tenacious reporting, nimble writing and her ability to tackle complex subjects with ease.

Since joining The Post in 2019, she has deftly covered a wide range of topics, including the war in Ukraine and the Ahmaud Arbery murder trial; she also wrote about COVID-19 and its politicization during a stint with the Health and Science team. She chronicled how the pandemic has shaped the identity of Gen Z, how a doctor who called COVID-19 vaccines "fake" made it onto a health board, how Provincetown, Mass., stress-tested the vaccine and what the fallout was like for a Trump-loving county that bought Dominion voting machines. During the 2020 campaign, she reported from the ground in Arizona about challenges to the vote.

Hannah grew up in San Jose, California. She holds a B.A. in English from Stanford University, where she got hooked on journalism through her work on the student newspaper.
