Interview: Pharma billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong wants LA Times to be his ‘family legacy’


In the years since Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong and his wife, Michele, bought the California Times group (which includes the Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Union-Tribune and a handful of community titles), they have invested hundreds of millions of dollars into modernizing the publisher.

“We may be close to $1bn by now,” says Soon-Shiong when I ask him how much he’s spent overall, adding together the $500m and subsequent investments in publishing software, journalists and infrastructure. “But I don’t have a fixed number because I’m, to be honest with you, not really clear.”
