It’s time for a new contract between journalists and public contributors: Here's a proposed 11-point code of conduct

Over the past two years, the relationship between news organizations and the public contributors who share their stories has been tested by a global, universally shared traumatic experience: the Coronavirus pandemic.

I worked as part of a team of BBC News journalists gathering real-life stories from those who had lost a loved one to COVID-19, and those who experienced the impact of serious illness. As I listened to the vast spectrum of responses to deeply personal loss, I began to think about the importance of formalizing journalistic practice of dealing with public contributors. Especially those dealing with trauma.
