The Houston Chronicle has named Jennifer Radcliffe as its new local news editor. In this role, she will oversee the local government and the local education teams.

Radcliffe has led the Chronicle’s education team for the past three years, guiding coverage of Houston ISD’s historic state takeover, suburban school systems and higher education. Under her direction, the team has earned several honors, including second place for team effort in the recent Texas Managing Editors awards.

The local government team includes coverage of city government, county politics, neighborhood issues and quality-of-life concerns across Greater Houston.

“Jennifer has a rare ability to elevate every reporter around her while keeping our mission clear: to serve Houstonians with smart, fair and high-impact journalism,” said Fernando Alfonso III, managing editor for news and content development. “She has a sharp news sense, a steady hand, and a deep respect for this city.”

Colleagues describe Radcliffe as a collaborative and calm leader who knows when to ask the hard questions and when to let reporters chase their instincts. She’s deeply attuned to what makes stories resonate in a digital age, and she brings a strong track record of coaching early-career journalists into confident, impactful storytellers.

“I am looking forward to helping our strong team of journalists continue to inform Houstonians about their community and to hold elected officials accountable for ensuring that Houston is a great place to live,” Radcliffe said.

Radcliffe first joined the Chronicle nearly 20 years ago, serving as a weekend editor and assistant city editor before taking on the education beat. She was previously a reporter at the Los Angeles Daily News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, where she was a Livingston Award finalist for her reporting on education inequality.

A graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Radcliffe has spent more than a decade teaching journalism at the University of Houston.
