We are so pleased to announce that Katie Zezima will join the Climate & Environment Department as editor overseeing our Science & Impact team.
In this new role, which is part of a significant expansion of Climate coverage at The Post, Katie will lead a pod of talented journalists covering the latest in climate and environmental science and the impact of a warming planet on the lives of people across the globe. Katie will oversee reporters in Washington and around the country chronicling life during periods of intense heat, chronic flooding, droughts, wildfires and other incidents of extreme weather as well as stories of adaptation, inequality and disruption.
Katie, an empathetic manager and skilled editor of prose, has won rave reviews from her bosses and her reporters as an editor on the Health and Science team, where she led some of our most important coverage of the covid-19 pandemic. She edited stories about a rise in deaths among the vaccinated, how covid made the flu and other viruses behave in weird ways, a look inside a Rhode Island emergency room overwhelmed by the omicron wave and the dangers of being pregnant and unvaccinated.
She also worked on multimedia projects including an examination of three days in the deadliest month of the pandemic, how people reunited after getting vaccinated and how the staggering scope of U.S. gun deaths goes beyond mass shootings.
Before joining the health team, Katie was an editor and reporter on the America desk, focused on drugs, guns, gambling and vice. She wrote about the NRA, including as part of a team that delved into the organization’s finances and showed how it directed money to board members and the opioid crisis. She also covered some of the nation’s biggest news stories, including the Pulse nightclub shooting and Hurricane Florence.
She also contributed to two Investigative projects selected as Pulitzer finalists: The Fentanyl Failure, about the opioid epidemic, and Murder with Impunity, for which she conceived and authored a deep examination of domestic slayings. Before joining the America desk, Katie covered Ted Cruz’s 2016 presidential campaign and the Obama White House.
Katie came to The Post in 2014 from the Newark bureau of The Associated Press, where she covered Cory Booker, Hurricane Sandy and a low-profile governor named Chris Christie. Before that, she worked for the New York Times in Boston. Katie spent the 2011-2012 academic year at the University of Michigan as a Knight-Wallace fellow, studying prescription drug abuse.
Katie first got exposed to journalism by going to work with her father, then an editor at the Stamford Advocate in Connecticut. She graduated from Boston University, where she met her husband while working on the student newspaper. They live in the District with their twin preschoolers and kindergartener. Katie likes cooking, midcentury design and, she says, thinking about hobbies she had before her kids.
