Announcement from Deputy Managing Editor for Politics, Sam Stein, Deputy White House Editor, Eun Kim, Managing Editor, Politics and Washington, Mike Zapler:

Folks,

We are thrilled to announce that Lauren Egan will be joining our White House team to help helm the West Wing Playbook newsletter.

Lauren comes to us from NBC News, where she has been a White House reporter since the start of the Biden presidency. She has proved to be precisely the type of reporter we want at POLITICO: scoop hungry, eager to tell compelling stories, a collaborative colleague admired across the newsroom. She will work side-by-side with Eli, Allie and Eun on the West Wing Playbook team. But she will also be part of our core White House unit, tasked with ensuring that we keep providing the most distinctive, penetrating coverage of the Biden administration.

Lauren brings both well-earned knowledge of the White House and a keen understanding of some of the administration’s most consequential domestic and foreign policy initiatives. She’s driven coverage of student loan forgiveness and closely covered the administration’s response to the war in Ukraine. She spent four months abroad, filing numerous stories from the frontlines in eastern Ukraine, while also covering the war’s impact across Europe, including on Viktor Orbán's re-election campaign in Hungary.

Before covering the Biden White House, Lauren spent the 2018 and 2020 election cycles on the campaign trail covering Donald Trump and his supporters. She started her career as a desk assistant at NBC.

Lauren is a former college swimmer and (tragically) a Vanderbilt football fan. She also is an aspiring cook, a consumer of fiction novels (yes, fiction) and considers Folly Beach, S.C., her second home. She is the proud owner of a 110-pound dog, appropriately named Elvis.

Lauren starts on Dec. 13. Please join us in welcoming her.
