Matt Brittin has been appointed as a non-executive director of Guardian Media Group board, taking up the position on Feb. 1.

Brittin recently stepped down from 18 years at Google, the last 10 as president for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

He led a third of Google’s global business, growing teams and relationships across the region. Brittin was a driving force behind Grow with Google, which trained over 25 million people in EMEA and tens of millions more around the world for the jobs of the future.

Prior to joining Google in 2007, Brittin spent time in media, marketing and strategy, including as commercial director at Trinity Mirror. He also served nine years on the board of Sainsbury’s and has been a trustee of charities including the Media Trust and the Climate Group.

Brittin was a member of the British rowing team for a number of years winning medals at the World Rowing Championships and part of the British Olympic team in Seoul.

Charles Gurassa, chair of the Guardian Media Group, said: “We are living through a moment of profound technological and social change that has the potential to reshape every aspect of the news sector. Matt’s technology and commercial expertise, including the nature of the risks and transformative opportunities of AI, will be hugely beneficial as we navigate through this rapidly evolving environment.”

Brittin said: “I have huge respect for the Guardian, its enduring values and growth in reach and influence. I’ve followed the Guardian’s progress and many of its talented journalists closely for years. I’m delighted to join the GMG board and aim to bring what I’ve learned about technology to help the Guardian navigate the latest wave of innovation and change successfully.”

Guardian Media Group is wholly owned by The Scott Trust Limited, which exists to secure the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity.
