Marketing professional Mindy Lawrence has been named publisher of Oswego County Media Group, which includes The Palladium-Times, The Fulton Valley News, The Oswego County News, The Oswego Shopper and online at OswegoCountyNewsNow.com — all part of Sample News Group (SNG).
The announcement was made Monday by SNG President Brian Nalepa. “We are very fortunate to have someone with Mindy’s experience to lead our team in Oswego. She truly has a passion for media and understands the ever-changing needs of our readership and advertisers.”
“I’m honored to be part of the team at Oswego County News Group,” Lawrence said. “I’m looking forward to developing relationships within the community.”
Lawrence has worked in the advertising industry for nearly 20 years, most recently at the Cortland Standard. As advertising and marketing manager, she led the development and implementation of advertising strategies, including daily advertising, special sections, special promotions and web-based advertising. She previously served in national roles in sales and communications for radio and television.
She got her start in college working at a local radio group and fell so much in love with the industry that she switched her intended career from nursing to advertising. “There’s a reason that I’ve stayed in the field so long,” she said. “It’s truly where my heart’s at. Most of the time, it’s been on the advertising side of things, but at the end of the day, it’s that type of revenue that keeps local news going.”
That passion for local news will fuel her vision for Oswego County Media Group to “continue providing trustworthy, quality news for the community that is of value to readers.”
What Lawrence likes most about local news is the sense of connection it creates within a community. “Sometimes you follow these families from birth all the way through their college years and beyond,” she said. “You see their birth announcements, high school sports, engagement announcements, wedding announcements. Sometimes they stay in the community, and you continue to follow their lives.”
As publisher, she wants to ensure the communities in the Oswego County Media Group readership continue to receive quality local news that is gathered by credible journalists. “I like that it is news that is gathered from person to person,” she said. “There is still a journalist going out there and collecting this information rather than just pulling something off the internet and putting it out there. I think that you get quality news from that.”
Lawrence lives in Locke, New York, with her husband and three daughters who are away at college. She is an avid golfer, active with community service and enjoys spending time with her Golden Retriever, Lucy.
