An announcement from Politics and Government Editor Lori Montgomery:

I am delighted to announce that Nick Baumann, who most recently served as politics editor and interim senior politics and democracy editor, will be deputy editor of the new Politics and Government department.

Over nearly two decades in Washington, Nick has established himself as an astute leader of politics and government coverage, always ambitious to bring urgency and insight to the daily report while making sure there is time and space for deep enterprise and probing investigations. Since joining The Post as deputy politics editor early last year, Nick has impressed colleagues with his keen eye for story targets, his strong editing and his relentless advocacy for deep reporting and vivid writing. Under his leadership, the team produced world-class coverage of the assassination attempt against then-candidate Donald Trump in Butler, Pa.; explained why many Latino voters were moving toward Trump and created a database of what House lawmakers spent under a new, receipt-free expense program. He also edited part of the Politics, Graphics and Well+Being collaboration that recently won the 2024 Katherine Schneider Journalism Award for Excellence in Reporting on Disability. Despite the blistering pace of the campaign and the new administration, Nick also has earned a reputation as an empathetic leader dedicated to the development and wellbeing of his reporters and editors.

Before coming to The Post, Nick served as deputy Washington bureau chief for the Los Angeles Times, where he led coverage of the 2024 campaign and edited daily, enterprise and feature stories about Congress, the White House and the nation’s immigration detention system. Before that, he served as politics editor at the Atlantic, where he ran much of the magazine’s digital coverage of the 2020 election and the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. Nick also has worked as a senior enterprise editor at HuffPost, a senior editor at Mother Jones and a blogger for the Economist.

A native of the tiny seaside village of Noank, Connecticut, Nick holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale University, where he was a sports editor for the Yale Daily News.

Please join me in congratulating Nick on his new role.
