I followed much of former Facebook product manager Frances Haugen's testimony to the U.S. Senate last week.
Listening to her explain how Facebook's algorithm-driven strategy uses conflict to drive audience that harms communities, how its Instagram platform causes teen girls to feel body shamed, how Congress needs to step up and regulate Facebook and other social media — it all reminded me of my days in graduate school in the early 1980s.
Specifically, I recalled debates we used to have about two subjects: the marketplace of ideas, and the notion of gatekeepers.
