State-directed funds subject to the whims of individual board members aren’t a sustainable solution

Your editorial “Google and California’s People’s Dailies” (Aug. 27) raises important concerns about a deal struck by California and Google that directs a combination of private and public money to local news organizations through a fund administered by University of California, Berkeley, and advised by a board of nonprofits.

As leaders of family-owned, independent newspaper companies operating publications in 28 states and more than 200 communities, we appreciate the recognition of the local news crisis and the efforts to address it. If nothing is done, Americans will lose access to independent journalism that reflects their community’s values, fosters civic engagement and holds elected representatives accountable. But state-directed funds subject to the whims of individual board members aren’t a sustainable solution to rebuilding our local news industry.
