Personal tech coverage grows with launch of 'The Tech Friend' newsletter from The Washington Post

The twice-weekly newsletter will offer practical tips for maximizing the personal technology used in daily life

Technology infuses every facet of daily life, yet the landscape is changing much faster than ever before. To help, The Washington Post is introducing “The Tech Friend,” a twice-weekly newsletter anchored by strategy editor Shira Ovide that will help people understand and take control of technology to better serve their lives.

The newsletter will build off of the core value of “Help Desk,” The Post’s popular personal tech vertical, which serves as a trusted resource that empowers millions of readers. “The Tech Friend” will launch on Nov. 22.

“In the year since we launched “Help Desk," we’ve seen a large appetite for coverage that helps people understand how rapid changes in technology impact their lives. The demand for this content is clear across all ages, especially with younger audiences. More than half of existing Help Desk readers are under the age of 45,” said Yun-Hee Kim, personal technology editor at The Washington Post. “This newsletter felt like a natural next step in expanding this coverage as it provides busy readers the quick, easy and digestible tips they can immediately apply to common dilemmas such as how to use your technology more sustainably, or how to reset your relationship with social media.”

Ovide’s writing will draw from more than a decade of experience covering technology at the New York Times, Bloomberg Opinion and The Wall Street Journal. Veteran technology journalist and Help Desk columnist Geoffrey A. Fowler will regularly write The Tech Friend newsletter, and it will also feature “Help Desk” reporters Heather Kelly, Chris Velazco, Tatum Hunter and Danielle Abril.

“Think of me as a wise, slightly grumpy friend who sorts through the babble to help you feel more confident about your technology choices, wags her finger at technology that is failing you, and helps you see the context that is bigger than you,” said Ovide. “Your inbox is a place for both solutions and for wrestling with the messiness of technology in your life, and I’m excited to navigate this alongside our readers.”

Read her insights weekly on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9:30 a.m. PT / 12:30 p.m. ET. Sign up here.
