Pew’s Stateline to join States Newsroom

States Newsroom selected as new home for The Pew Charitable Trusts’ news service covering state policy

States Newsroom, the nation’s leading network of state-based nonprofit news outlets, has announced that it will be the new home for Stateline, the nonprofit news service that reports and analyzes trends in state policy.

Founded in 1998, Stateline has brought national attention to the impact of state government through its in-depth and data-driven reporting, while also providing a roundup of news coverage from around the country. Stateline aims to identify trends and issues that cross state boundaries, with an emphasis on how different states are grappling with the same challenges. Through this merger, States Newsroom will expand its staff of dedicated journalists covering state policy and politics to more than 180. The Pew Charitable Trusts and States Newsroom approved the merger earlier in February, and the organizations expect the transition to be completed in the coming months. Stateline reporters will continue their work and be published on a revamped Stateline.org as well as States Newsroom’s News from the States, a comprehensive source for statehouse news across the country, and its growing network of 32 state-based outlets.

“We’re very excited to have Stateline join our network of independent outlets reporting on state capitals around the nation. Their reporters have been producing top-rate reporting on state-level developments, and we are eager to introduce their work to our readers,” said Chris Fitzsimon, director and publisher of States Newsroom. “Over the past few years, we have seen local and state newsrooms forced to cut budgets, pushing them to make staff cuts or shut down completely. We believe everyone, no matter what state you are in, deserves access to high-quality non-partisan news.”

“As we searched for a new permanent home for Stateline and its staff, our guiding principle was to find a media organization that aligned with our mission; to provide fact-based, non-partisan news on the issues and policies that affect people’s daily lives,” said Scott Greenberger, executive editor of Stateline. “We are thrilled to have found a like-minded partner in States Newsroom, that not only has the resources to sustain and distribute Stateline and is committed to maintaining the quality of Stateline’s journalism, but also will allow us to expand our reach and deepen our engagement with our audience.”

“Pew is proud to have supported Stateline for more than two decades as it has developed into a preeminent non-partisan, fact-based and data-driven news service reporting on state policy,” said Michael Caudell-Feagan, executive vice-president and chief program officer of The Pew Charitable Trusts. “States Newsroom is a great fit as the new home for Stateline and we look forward to watching as it continues to grow and enhance its impact.”

In 2021, The Washington Post reported on the shortage of reporters covering state government, highlighting States Newsroom’s plans to expand its footprint to have independent newsrooms in roughly 40 states to fill the void in coverage left by staffing cuts at legacy media outlets.

States Newsroom also recently expanded its reach by launching new content-sharing partnerships with eight independent nonprofit outlets, including The Texas Tribune, to host their reporting on News from the States.
