The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has requested the help of a federal mediator in contract disputes that have resulted in a strike by five unions at the newspaper, the first in decades.

Union leadership of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh, part of the much larger Communications Workers of America union and representing about 100 reporters, photographers and other newsroom employees, on Wednesday said it welcomes the involvement of the federal mediation service in settling a dispute that began five years ago.

“The Guild has always agreed to have an FMCS mediator present in negotiations; in fact a mediator was present in many bargaining sessions after our 2017 contract expired, but it’s up to the Post-Gazette to come in good faith to negotiate,” Guild President Zack Tanner said in a prepared statement. “The Guild is ready to get to bargaining when the PG is.”

In an Oct. 27 letter to Mr. Tanner, PG human resources Director Carolyn J. Rice wrote that a mediator’s assistance “may prove valuable to the parties in their attempt to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.”
