Announcement from National Editor Matea Gold, Deputy National Editor Philip Rucker and Senior Politics Editor Dan Eggen:

We are delighted to announce that Sean Sullivan will be our new deputy politics editor for campaigns, bringing his sharp news judgment, hunger for scoops and high-tempo metabolism to our coverage of the 2022 midterm elections and beyond.

Sean has been serving in this role in an acting capacity since April, earning high praise from reporters and editors alike for his story ideas, deft line editing and meticulous planning for the spring and summer primaries.

Before that, Sean was a White House reporter, anchoring deeply reported stories about President Biden and the power players in his administration, including White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. He also broke news on Biden's refugee policy and revealed new details about the White House’s broader immigration deliberations.

A veteran of campaign reporting, Sean covered the past three presidential campaigns for The Post. As a national political reporter in 2019 and 2020, Sean was The Post’s lead reporter chronicling the presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders. He quickly established himself as the reporter to beat, earning the nickname "Scoops Sullivan" by other journalists in the Sanders press pool. He broke the story of an internal fight between campaign organizers and management over wages; the decision by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to endorse Sanders; Sanders staffers' complaints about purchases from Amazon; and the pressure on Sanders by some aides to consider ending his campaign. During the general election, Sean covered the Biden campaign, including his search for a running mate, and he broke the story of Sanders' private concerns about Biden's strategy.

Sean joined The Post in 2012 as a reporter on The Fix, reporting on and analyzing campaigns. In 2016, Sean hit the trail as a national political reporter covering Marco Rubio's presidential campaign and, later, Donald Trump's campaign.

After the 2016 election, Sean served as a congressional reporter, regularly breaking news on tensions between Republican senators, including an expletive-laced exchange between Lindsey Graham and Bob Corker.

Sean is also a political contributor for CBS News.

Please join us in congratulating Sean on his exciting new role, which begins immediately.
