From Tim O’Rourke, vice president of content strategy for Hearst Newspapers:

The San Francisco Chronicle’s data team has brought a new level of computational journalism to Bay Area readers since its launch in 2021. Now, the team is expanding its scope and debuting a newsletter, California Data Dive, which you can sign up for here

“The data team is thrilled about starting this newsletter as a way to engage more deeply with our readers,” said Data Editor Dan Kopf. “It is a chance to dig even further into the numbers and provide insight on how we report our stories. And we’re excited about getting direct feedback and ideas from our audience. They often have terrific ideas.”

The data team has grown in terms of staff size, journalistic impact and audience reach over the past two years, and the launch of the California Data Dive newsletter represents the next step in the team’s mission to reach more readers interested in data-driven journalism.

The team focuses on San Francisco, the Bay Area and beyond, and its impact can be seen in an array of stories, analyses, investigations and reader tools that take a numbers-forward approach to regional and community news coverage. The newsletter will primarily focus on the Bay Area but will also analyze statewide issues that affect local readers.

“The data team has opened new doors for our coverage since joining the newsroom a few years ago, and we only see their impact growing,” said Editor in Chief Emilio Garcia-Ruiz. “This newsletter will be another way to grow their readership, make an impact and hopefully have some fun while doing it.”

The newsroom team’s impact can especially be seen in major projects focused on electionsclimate change and the transforming Bay Area

Some of the team’s recent highlights include:

The data team works closely and collaboratively with the SFChronicle newsroom and the DevHub, a Hearst Newspapers team of engineers, developers and content strategists that build frameworks, strategies and major projects in partnership with local journalists.

The California Data Dive newsletter launches soon and will hit readers’ inboxes on Saturdays.
