We are delighted to announce that Tess Felder will be joining the Culture desk as a senior staff editor in London.
Tess will assign, edit and write news stories and quick-turnaround off-the-news features, working with our European culture editor, Matt Anderson, and reporter Alex Marshall. European culture is a big patch — covering everything from contemporary art to TV across the continent — and Tess will help us keep on top of news events and follow pop culture trends as they bubble up.
Tess comes from the International desk in London, where she has been an editor for the past six years after stints in New York and Hong Kong. In addition to handling a wide array of breaking news and of-the-moment pieces like her look at scratch-and-sniff baguette postage stamps for the Paris Olympics, she has led dozens of blogs on events such as Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the queen’s death later that year and the recent funeral for Pope Francis. From International, she has already worked on Culture stories as a first and second editor for news articles, features and criticism, and contributed great ideas like the 2024 Booker Prize preview that invited reader participation.
“Tess is a fantastic editor,” Matt says. “She’s done such great things on International and is highly regarded in that department. When news is breaking, she is quick, calm and efficient. And when events aren’t driving the day so much, Tess is full of creative story ideas. She has a lot of drive to make things happen and a great network across the newsroom.”
Adrienne Carter, Europe editor, adds, “Tess is a multitalented editor who is eager for any challenge, whether it is digging into complicated live coverage, tackling breaking news or fine-tuning a nice bright. Since moving to London in 2019, she has been a cornerstone of our news team from Covid to Ukraine to the pope. She is a lovely human with an infectious energy, so I am thrilled she will still be part of our London family.”
Tess joined The Times in 2013 by way of the News Service in Gainesville, Fla., and soon moved to New York as the News Service’s deputy managing editor. She went on to join The Times’s copy desk, first on Foreign/National and then the Live News copy desk, before moving to International in 2017.
Please join us in welcoming her to the team.
