We are excited to share the news that Felicia Vasquez has been promoted to the position of art director.
Felicia joined the Features Design team as a staff editor in 2021, after making significant contributions as a freelance designer. Since then, she’s become a crucial member of our team, most recently working alongside Jennifer Ledbury on Arts & Leisure. Together, they’re responsible for the visual delight that is the 92-page fall culture preview The New Season.
Felicia has skillfully taken on the responsibilities of an art director, designing gorgeous poster covers and interior layouts that both inform and delight readers. Her art direction for a feature on The Legend of Zelda” by Zachary Small and Rumsey Taylor, was recognized with a Gold medal by the Society for News Design.
Felicia has also played important roles in some of our most ambitious projects and special sections. Just in the past year, her work on the print sections devoted to “Being 13,” Jessica Bennett’s exploration of three girls’ first year as teenagers, and “50 Rappers, 50 Stories,” Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli’s deep dive on five decades of hip-hop, was recognized by the Society of Publication Designers. These awards confirmed what we already knew: Felicia is ready for this well-deserved promotion.
It’s been an absolute pleasure to watch Felicia develop her skills at The Times over the years, starting as a member of the first class of fellows in 2019. Felicia has been an organizational force, breaking down complex projects into clear action plans and building consensus with clear communication. She has mentored and trained new hires and fellows, and has served as a technical resource for the entire department, where “I’ll ask Felicia,” is a common refrain.
We feel lucky to have her on our team. Felicia will continue to concentrate on Arts & Leisure, while steering occasional special projects and sections. Please join us in congratulating her!
