The New York Times announces updates on the London breaking news hub

Posted

Joel Petterson has been named the hub’s lead editor for Express, making him the point person for driving Express stories in London hours. Since joining the desk in 2023, Joel has demonstrated excellent news judgment, a keen eye for trending topics, deft editing skills and a much prized sense of humor. He has helped ensure seamless handoffs of daily news with Seoul and New York, been a strong partner to Live and worked closely with International, Business, Culture and other desks in London to help us deliver the strongest possible news report for the U.S. morning. Reporters know him as a champion of storytelling that is innovative, surprising and just plain fun. Joel previously worked on Home, Sports and the copy desk, building relationships across the newsroom that will serve him well in his new role.

Erin Mendell

Erin Mendell is joining the hub as an editor. Erin is moving over from Seoul, where she’s had a stellar three-year run as Live editor helping to guide some of our most complex coverage while New York sleeps — from the wars in Ukraine and Gaza to wildfires in Maui and political turmoil in South Korea. Erin is a surehanded editor who maintains high standards even as the news is flying. She’s a fantastic teammate who has embraced the Express-Live partnership to help The Times own breaking news coverage around the clock. And she has reporting chops, too. Erin started her Times career in Seoul after more than a decade at The Wall Street Journal and several years at The Baltimore Sun. She’ll miss her colleagues in Asia and the chance to practice her Korean every day, but she’s looking forward to exploring London’s bookshops and swimming pools when she arrives later this year.

Kieran Corcoran

We’re also pleased to welcome Kieran Corcoran as an editor. Kieran comes to The Times after seven years at Business Insider, where he helped build that news organization’s general news desk in London and rose to become deputy U.K. bureau chief, leading a team of about 20 journalists. He oversaw coverage of the war in Ukraine, including an ambitious project on Russia’s capture of Bakhmut, as well as deep dives into a U.S. anti-abortion group and gender-transition surgery in Iran. Kieran impressed us with his creative approach to storytelling, his track record of producing stories that succeed with audiences and his enthusiasm for collaboration across a global newsroom. He grew up in Essex, England; studied at the University of Cambridge; and lives in north London with his partner and their two daughters. He started with us this month.

Please join us in congratulating Joel, Erin and Kieran.
