The Washington Post announces new leadership for Opinion section

Washington Post Opinion Editor David Shipley named new leaders in the opinion section, promoting and introducing key roles helping to drive the evolution of one of the industry’s most innovative opinions departments.

 “There is a tradition of great leadership at The Post and this group is no exception,” said Shipley. “The aim of this structure is to build on all the terrific work already taking place at Post Opinions while at the same time making us even more agile, more digital and more intentional in our publishing. This team will ensure that we continue to guide readers through the important news conversations taking place in the U.S. and around the world.”

 The opinion section will now have four deputy opinion editors with new or expanded responsibilities.

• Karen Tumulty, deputy opinion editor and columnist, will continue to steer the Editorial Board. Before joining Opinions, Tumulty was a national political correspondent and earned the 2014 Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting.
• Mary Duenwald and David Von Drehle will lead the editors and columnists. Duenwald joined The Post Opinions section in October as a senior editor from Bloomberg, where she oversaw the section’s U.S.-based columnists and editors. Before joining Bloomberg in 2011, she was the Deputy Op-Ed page editor at The New York Times.
• Von Drehle has had a storied career at The Post, serving as a staff writer on the National staff and at the Magazine and was Assistant Managing Editor in Style. Most recently as a columnist he wrote about national affairs and politics from a home base in the Midwest.
• Meghan Kruger, currently an associate opinion editor, will guide business and publishing functions for the department, including the copy desk, the audience development team and art and design.

In addition, Op-Ed Editor Mike Larabee will serve as managing editor for the department, helping to coordinate the opinion report. Steve Stromberg has also been promoted to associate opinion editor and will serve as Tumulty’s deputy.

The new roles will be effective Monday, Dec. 5.
