Tom Giratikanon returns to The New York Times

Posted

I am thrilled to announce that Tom Giratikanon is returning to The Times after almost three years at Vox Media, where he served as deputy publisher.

He will return as a senior editor for The Upshot, where he will help us build on our success envisioning journalism in new forms, from the Dialect Quiz to WordleBot to our interactive N.F.L. playoff simulator. He’ll be working with a small team across The Upshot, Graphics, Design and Interactive News, along with journalists from around the newsroom, to envision, prototype and build engaging, interactive journalism that helps our readers better understand the world and their place in it.

For many in the newsroom, Tom (often “Tom G” or simply “TG”) needs no introduction, having earned a reputation in his eight years at The Times (from 2012 to 2020) as one of the company’s sharpest journalists and problem-solvers. There isn’t room in one memo to list all his accomplishments from his time here, but below are just a few.

He helped engineer and maintain Preview, The Times’s first platform for creating and collaborating on interactive journalism; he and Wilson Andrews led a 40-person team that helped establish The Times as the industry leader in live election results; he helped design and prototype the first versions of what is now Oak, our principal internal authoring tool; and he was part of the team that produced the influential 2020 report that outlined an ambitious digital strategy for the newsroom.

Tom also created and edited hundreds of graphics, mentored a generation of young staffers and was peerless in his ability to order the perfect amount of food for hungry journalists working through any news event.

Please join me in welcoming Tom G. home.
