Announcement from Sports Editor Jason Murray, Deputy Sports Editor Matt Rennie and Sports Assignment Editor Mark Selig:
We are excited to announce that Varun Shankar is joining The Post as our new Washington Wizards reporter.
Varun was most recently a summer intern at The Post, where he covered a variety of teams and sports including the Washington Commanders, the Washington Nationals, the Washington Capitals and the DC Open tennis tournament. In addition to game and event coverage, Varun wrote a handful of features, including this in-depth look at a D.C. runner who was reinvigorated by participating in a local running group and qualified for the Olympics.
Varun was a news aide for The Post for three years before his internship, covering local high school sports. Among his many memorable stories was a fun look at the quirks of high school basketball coaches and where they stand during games.
Varun has had internships at the Boston Globe, the Sports Business Journal and the Charlotte Observer. In those roles he's covered the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, the Carolina Panthers and Super Bowl LVII.
Varun has a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and grew up in Sterling, Va. He’s a big fan of "The Lord of The Rings," "A Song of Ice and Fire" and the "Mission Impossible" franchise.
Please join us in welcoming Varun to The Post as a full-time employee. His first day is Sept. 3.
