Washington Post Editorial Page Editor David Shipley announced that Sara Abdullah and Mary Duenwald will be joining Post Opinions as senior editors. Abdulla comes from Nature, the global science journal, where she has been chief opinion editor for the last 15 years. She will be based in London. Duenwald joins from Bloomberg Opinion, where she served as a managing editor and member of the editorial board focused on health and science.

In addition to her role overseeing Nature’s columns, comment, book reviews and obituaries, Abdulla put the journal’s work on new platforms and broadened the range of voices that appear in its pages and on its screens. She has overseen the creation of a list of popular science books, taught science journalism and reported for The Financial Times, The Times of London and The Lancet. She has a degree in math and a graduate degree in crystallography. She also wrote theater reviews for Time Out in London. She begins her role in January.

At Bloomberg, Duenwald oversaw the section’s U.S.-based columnists and editors. Before coming to Bloomberg in 2011, she was the deputy Op-Ed page editor at The New York Times. She was also a features editor at Vogue and a writer and editor at The Sciences. She will join the Post Opinions team in D.C. in October.
