The police in London arrested a 12th suspect on Wednesday in connection with Britain’s widening mobile phone hacking scandal, and British news reports identified the person as Greg Miskiw, a former editor at The News of the World, the now-defunct tabloid owned by the Rupert Murdoch media empire.

Mr. Miskiw, 61, left The News of the World in 2005 and later moved to Florida.

The arrests have built since the scandal escalated exponentially last month with the closure of the tabloid and public apologies by Mr. Murdoch and his subordinates over the journalistic practices at the newspaper. Those include paying police officers for information and hacking into the cellphone voice-mails of targets believed to include political leaders, celebrities, families of war dead and even a teenage murder victim.
