2 More Papers Join API's Learning Newsroom

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Bakersfield Californian and The Hamilton Spectator in Ontario, Canada, are the latest partners of The Learning Newsroom at the American Press Institute, a pilot training program design to equip journalists to better adapt to change.

?These newsrooms are among the most risk-taking in their efforts to produce journalism today?s readers will find vital and relevant to their lives,? Vickey Williams, project director for the Learning Newsroom, said in a statement. ?That track record makes them ideal candidates for a program as forward-thinking as The Learning Newsroom.

The two papers join The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Ind., The Citizen-Times in Asheville, N.C., and The Telegraph in Nashua, N.H.?the first three newsrooms to launch the program in fall 2004.

They were selected after an application and interview process. Each enters a two-year affiliation with the program, which is a joint venture of API and the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

The Learning Newsroom, over three years, will work with 10 newsrooms of varying circulation sizes to help improve and expand in-house training and development. It is funded by a $1 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
