By: A brother and sister from Wisconsin who battled subzero temperatures along with hundreds of other treasure-searchers won $10,000 after finding the Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion below a fallen tree in St. Paul.
Andrew Burke, 21, of Knapp, Wis., and Jessica French, 26, of Baldwin, Wis., found the medallion shortly after 12 a.m. Wednesday in Indian Mounds Regional Park. The medallion was concealed in a 3M invisible tape carton.
"Excited, stoked" was how Burke, a student at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, described himself after newspaper officials confirmed the medallion to be authentic.
The two also won $1,200 worth of groceries at Cub Foods.
Burke and French went to the park after the newspaper published the 11th of 12 clues traditionally given out during the search. The first clue was published Jan. 20, and Burke and French would typically begin searching for the medallion each night at 9 p.m. and spend six to eight hours hunting.
Hundreds of searchers looked for the medallion at the park Tuesday, despite wind chill temperatures that dipped to 40 below zero.
The newspaper has sponsored the treasure hunt for 57 years.
