By: Dave Astor Next spring's Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop has sold out in 12 days. More than 300 writers from 43 states and Canada registered for the University of Dayton event, and 70 people are on the waiting list.
Why are so many people interested in the March 23-25, 2006, gathering? One draw is a speaker roster that includes Dave Barry, the on-hiatus columnist for The Miami Herald and Tribune Media Services; and W. Bruce Cameron, the Creators Syndicate columnist who authored "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter."
Also, Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop Director Tim Bete told E&P that the event "fills a niche no other workshop fills -- humor and human-interest writing."
Many attendees of the every-two-year workshop are columnists and/or authors. The late Bombeck fit both of those categories herself -- writing a syndicated feature for 700 newspapers as well as a number of bestselling books.
The workshop, which also attracts beginning writers, will have more than 25 speakers this March. In addition to Barry and Cameron, they include columnists Mary McCarty of the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News, Susan Reinhardt of The Asheville (N.C.) Citizen-Times, Craig Wilson of USA Today, Dave Lieber of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and self-syndicators Gordon Kirkland and Jodie Lynn, among others. Also speaking will be Bete, who writes a self-syndicated humor column.
