Global Voices Online, a Web site about daily life and conversations in more than 130 countries, has been chosen as the winner of this year's Grand Prize winner in the Knight-Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism. The site will receive a $10,000 prize.
Multilingual editors on the site discover and contact and publish interesting bloggers from around the world and get them to talk about what others in their country are talking about. The blogs on the site are organized by topic and country. The site is sponsored by Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society.
"It's an extraordinary site that allows for both editorial gatekeeping and wide access to news and information from underreported parts of the world," said the panel of judges in a statement.
Five other sites won $1,000 awards of distinction. For the full list of winners, click
