50-Year Bismarck Newspaperman John Peterson Dies at 72

By: John Peterson, who spent most of his 50-year newspaper career at the Bismarck Tribune, including stints as city editor, sports editor and state Capitol reporter, has died.

He was 72.

The Tribune said Peterson, who was known as "John Pete" in the newsroom, died Tuesday in Bismarck.

He was a native of Two Rivers, Wis., who joined the Tribune in 1958 as a reporter.

Peterson was named North Dakota Sportswriter of the Year in 1964. He resigned in 1965 and returned to work in Two Rivers, then returned to the Tribune in 1970 as a reporter and editor.

He retired last summer.

Peterson is survived by his wife, Bethel; two children and four grandchildren.
