This year was described by Medill Local News Initiative researchers as “simultaneously sobering and inspiring,” an apt depiction of this juncture in our industry. News deserts continue to proliferate, while at the same time, digital-only local news sources are expanding. Philanthropic funding is seeding investments in newsrooms, tools and technology with a goal of establishing sustainable solutions.
As the year draws to a close, we offer our annual roundup of hopeful trends from the year. Despite the headwinds and deep challenges, we believe there is room to celebrate and find inspiration in these positive trends.
