A First? `Philly Inquirer? Launches Mobile Sports News Service

By: E&P Staff The Philadelphia Inquirer Friday launched a mobile information service for sports news called Inquirer Sports Extra.

Inquirer Sports Extra will be available free for the first two months to new newspaper subscribers, the paper said. For existing newspaper subscribers, the service will cost 99-cents per month. The monthly charge for non-newspaper subscribers is $2.99.

The new service includes text message alerts of breaking sports news. It also features a site that can be accessed by mobile devices with Internet service.

Philadelphia Media Holdings CEO and Inquirer Publisher Brian Tierney said the service is the first by a newspaper to offer live updates sent from sportswriters reporting from the playing fields or after-game locker rooms.

"We have the largest staff of sports reporters and editors in the region, and if you are a sports nut like I am, you are going to want to tap these resources to get the latest sports news available," Tierney said.

The new service is a result of a partnership between the Inquirer and Verve Wireless, a provider of mobile publishing solutions with offices in Philadelphia and San Diego.

Verve Wireless is headed by Art Howe, a former Philadelphia Inquirer reporter who owned the Montgomery Newspapers group of Philadelphia-area community papers and the alternative City Paper.
