A new hire joins the London Breaking News Hub at The New York Times

From aviation accidents to art heists, elections to flash floods, covering breaking news from The Times’s busy London hub requires agility, sharp judgment, fast fingers and a great metabolism for stories. Our newest hire is a veteran who possesses all this in abundance, in addition to a seemingly boundless ability to spot fresh angles on major events.

We are excited to announce that Karla Adam has joined us as a correspondent in the London Breaking News Hub, a partnership of Express and Live. Karla comes to The Times after two decades at The Washington Post, most of them as U.K. correspondent, where she wrote on just about every topic under the sun: elections, royals, climate, conflict and more. She is as comfortable banging out a breaking story from her desk as she is in the field, having authored sparkling dispatches from the English countryside and from Keir Starmer’s favorite London pub. She has interviewed David Attenborough, migrants crossing the English Channel and reindeer herders in the Arctic Circle, in addition to investigating the British monarchy’s historic links to the slave trade and reporting from across Europe. And she understands the Eurovision Song Contest well enough to explain it to “perplexed Americans.”

“Karla is a brilliant reporter, a lively writer and a trusted colleague,” said Emily Rauhala, an editor on International in London who worked with Karla at The Post. “The London newsroom is fortunate to have her creativity and collegial spirit.”

This is not Karla’s first stint with The Times: She began her career as a freelancer in London, stringing for former Times bureau chief Alan Cowell. Before that, she studied at Columbia Journalism School, the London School of Economics and Queen’s University in her native Canada, where she grew up on an Alberta cattle farm. A former president of the Association of American Journalists in London, she lives in South London.

Please join us in welcoming Karla.
