A Third Coast for 'NY Post'

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg The New York Post went on sale Jan. 6 on Florida's Gulf Coast, the result of a two-year, 10,000-copy-a-day printing agreement with the St. Petersburg Times.

Vendors for the Post will distribute to single-copy-sales outlets stretching from Lakeland south to Port Charlotte. The deal adds to southeastern Florida sales of copies printed by Miami Offset.

The Times cited its web size and print quality as factors for its choice by the Post. Printing the Post at 9:30 p.m. does not affect Times deadlines, according to Operations Director Joe DeLuca.

The same day across the country, copies of the Post printed at the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin in Ontario, Calif., went on sale for $1 at more than 1,800 locations, including airports, in Los Angeles and Orange counties. The Post said home delivery also will be available in certain areas through distribution partnerships with local papers and distributors. Though the Daily Bulletin printed 22,000 copies for Jan. 6, Post Vice President and General Manager Geoff Booth said the press run will be "a moving target for the next six weeks" while distributors determine the demand.

The arrangement replaces copies flown in for next-day sale. "Our focus is still New York City," Post Editor in Chief Col Allan said. "We won't be tailoring content for California."

For other markets, "we've got no plans," said Booth, noting that except for Boston and Washington (where copies are trucked in overnight), demand is mainly in Florida and California.
