By: E&P Staff The Audit Bureau of Circulations is raising red flags about the circulation of the Tribune Co.'s Hoy, examining further back than the problem years already disclosed.
ABC says it can no longer vouch for the numbers from 1999 to 2002, because of poor record-keeping by independent contractors, newsstands, and stores that sell the Spanish-language paper, according to a James Madore report today in Tribune's Melville, N.Y., daily, Newsday.
Previously, Tribune said both Hoy and Newsday had inflated their circulation going back to 2001.
"Hoy has said all along that the third-party circulation reports [from contractors, newsstands and stores] prior to September 2003 were incomplete, making it difficult to determine the extent of any circulation misstatements," said publisher Digby A. Solomon Diez.
Tribune has set aside $90 million to pay settlements to advertisers.
