Abitibi Expected To Announce Newsprint Price Hike

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg Abitibi-Consolidated is expected to announce an Aug. 1 newsprint price hike of $50 per metric ton. With May figures showing demand rising for the first time in more than 18 months, a second-half price increase was expected.

Abitibi could not be reached for comment by deadline on Friday.

Citing market sources, Forestweb's James McLaren noted Friday that the announcement shortens the traditional 90-day notice given customers, who have been paying as low as $430 a ton, according Forestweb's "The Reel-Time Report."

No other suppliers are expected to announce so soon, but an analyst told Forestweb that market conditions suggest success in making a higher price stick.
