About Three-Dozen of 2,000 Clients Canceled 'FBorFW' in Recent Weeks

Posted
By: Dave Astor So far, "fewer than 2%" of the 2,000 or so "For Better or For Worse" clients have told Universal Press Syndicate that they're canceling Lynn Johnston's comic.

That's according to Universal Assistant Vice President for Communications Kathie Kerr, when queried today by E&P.

Two percent of 2,000 is 40 newspapers, so apparently 30-something clients dropped the comic because of this week's move to "new-runs."

Kerr said The Washington Post is the only client to cancel that was on the comic's "top-10 newspaper list by circulation."

She added: "It is still too early for any kind of firm data, because we expect that some of the newspaper editors who indicated they'll cancel might change their minds. As we've seen before, reader support can be very powerful."

Kerr also named some of the papers that are definitely keeping "FBorFW" -- or at least trying out the "new-runs" version. She mentioned the Los Angeles Times, Toronto Star, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, and the Centre Daily Times in State College, Pa.

She said a recent story in that last paper read: "Your favorite comic, at least according to our big survey last year, is going into 'new-runs'.... 'For Better or for Worse,' which led the voting by far, is popular everywhere, and it looks like the reruns and artist Lynn Johnston's approach to them will keep the strip's fans happy."
