Actually, 'NY Times' Rules Out Charging for Site (For Now)

By: (AP) The New York Times said it has no current plans to begin charging subscription fees for access to its popular news Web site, NYTimes.com.

Over the years, "as part of our ongoing business discussions, we've debated the merits of a subscription model," but "we have no plans to start charging for the site at this point," said Catherine Mathis, a spokeswoman for the newspaper's parent, New York Times Co.

Mathis's comments followed earlier news reports that the company was mulling whether charging for the site made sense. The Times site now is generally free to registered users, although some features do require a fee. Mathis said the site did charge foreign users at one point years ago.

One of the Times's rivals, The Wall Street Journal, charges for access to its online edition, WSJ.com.

"We would be delighted if the New York Times web site joined The Wall Street Journal Online in seeking a subscription fee," said Gordon Crovitz, senior vice president of Dow Jones and president of the company's electronic-publishing group, in a statement.
