By: E&P Staff Journal Communications reported total revenue fell 6.7% to $36.4 million for the July period compared to the same period a year ago. Advertising revenue dropped 8% to $31.5 million.
At its publishing segment, which includes the company's daily and community newspapers, total revenue declined 7.6% to $20.5 million. Advertising revenue tumbled 10.6% to $13.9 million. Circulation revenue slipped 3.5% to $4.1 million.
Advertising revenue at the company's flagship, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, was down 8.8% to $12.3 million. Retail ad revenue fell 5.7%. National revenue plunged 25.6%. Classified ad revenue declined 3.9%. Within the classified category, auto dropped 11.5%, help wanted decreased 8.7%, and real estate fell 13.1%. Circulation revenue was down 1.3% to $3.9 million. Interactive revenue grew 40.3% to $1 million.
At the company's community newspapers, total advertising revenue for the July period declined 17.5% to $2.6 million largely due to certain revenue previously reported by the community newspapers that is now reported under the daily newspaper. Retail ad revenue slipped 17.2%. Classified ad revenue dropped 18.9%. Circulation revenue fell 57.2% but the company noted it was because of the change to a free distribution model for the Milwaukee-area community papers.
Total revenue at the company's broadcasting division dropped 5.5% to $15.8 million.
