Ad Revenue Soars At Journal Communications -- But Down At Papers

By: E&P Staff Journal Communications reported Thursday that its total revenues for October were $47.2 million, up 16.1% over last year, on advertising revenues that jumped 19.1% to $33.85 million.

Journal Communications said revenue for its tenth period, ended Oct. 22, were driven by revenue from television operations acquired in December 2005. Without those new revenues, total revenues would have been up 4.6% and ad revenues up 5.3%.

Nearly all of the good news, however, came from the broadcast side of Milwaukee-based Journal Communications.

On the publishing side, total revenues were down 4.5% to $27.2 million, while ad revenues slumped 6.4% to $19.06 million. Circulation revenues decreased 3.9% to $4.23 million for the group.

In that segment, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported total advertising revenue of $14.03 million, down 6.3% from October 2005.

Retail advertising was down 1.1%; and classified advertising revenue was down 9.6%, while the national advertising revenue of $0.85 million increased 25.3%.

Direct marketing revenue plunged 49.5% to $0.50 million because of the loss of a large solo mail customer.

Within the Journal Sentinel's classified advertising, the help wanted was essentially flat, while auto plunged 25.2%, real estate was down 11.7%, and "other" classified fell7.5%.

Journal Sentinel circulation revenue was down 4% to $4 million.

Total advertising revenue for Journal Communications community newspapers and shoppers dropped 6.5% to $5.02 million, principally on a decrease of 11.2% in classified and a plunge of 50.9% in "other" advertising.

Broadcast revenue soared 57.6% because of the new operations. On a same-property basis, broadcast revenues jumped 22.9%.
