Ad Revenue Up Nearly 3% in Q2

By: E&P Staff Online advertising revenue in Q2 soared 28.6% to $500.7 million compared to the same period a year ago, according to the Newspaper Association of America. Print advertising revenue increased 1.9% to $11.7 billion. Overall, newspaper advertising revenue, including online, grew 2.8% to $12.2 billion in Q2.

For print only, retail advertising for the quarter was up 1.4% to $5.5 billion. National declined 2.8% to $2.1 billion. Classified advanced 5.3% to $4.1 billion.

Within the classified category, help wanted grew 13.7% (* see correction below) to $1.3 billion. Real estate was up 7.2% to $1 billion. Automotive dropped 5.3% to $1.1 billion. All other classifieds were up 6.5% to $676 million.

"Newspaper ad spending for retail and classified continued on a positive trend, and we expect this trend to gain momentum for the second half of the year," John Sturm, NAA President and CEO, said in a statement.

In the first half of the year, total print and online advertising revenue rose 3.2% to $23.2 billion. Total print revenue advanced 2.2% to $22.2 billion.

For print only, for the first half of the year, retail advertising increased 2.1% to $10.4 billion. Classified grew 4.4% to $7.8 billion and national was down 1.8% to $3.9 billion.

Within the classified category for the first half of the year, help wanted rose 14.6% to $2.2 billion, real estate increased 3.9% to $2.1 billion, and automotive slipped 4.9% to $2.2 billion. Other classifieds grew 7% to $1.3 billion.
