Ads Inch Up in Retail, National

By: Lucia Moses Ad expenditures in newspapers edged up 1.8% to $9.9 billion in the first quarter of 2003, according to preliminary estimates from the Newspaper Association of America.

Percentage increases by category were as follows: retail, up 2.5%; national, up 3.7%; and classified, down 0.2%. Within classifieds, help-wanted declined 10.8%; real estate rose 8.6%; automotive gained 1.9%; and
all others rose 3.4%.
