Advance Alabama/Mississippi Appoints New Publisher

By: E&P Staff Ricky Mathews has been named president of Advance Alabama/Mississippi and will assume oversight responsibility for the Birmingham (Ala.) News and the Huntsville (Ala.) Times, in addition to serving as president and publisher of the Press-Register in Mobile, Ala., the Baldwin Register in Bay Minette, Ala., and The Mississippi Press in Pascagoula.

Mathews, who left the Sun-Herald of Biloxi, Miss. earlier this month after 27 years at the paper, had served as its publisher since 2001. He succeeds Howard Bronson as president and publisher of the Press-Register.

"I am thrilled to be joining the teams in Mobile and Mississippi as their new publisher, as well as working closely with the teams in Birmingham and Huntsville in the newly created role as president of Advance Alabama/Mississippi," Mathews told the Press-Register.

Mathews began work at the Sun-Herald in 1982 as an intern and held various positions in the paper's advertising, circulation, production, operations and marketing departments. Under Mathews, the Sun-Herald won the 2006 Pulitzer Prize Gold Medal for Public Service for its coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.
