The Newhouse family, owners of Advance Publications, yesterday
announced that it has acquired three daily newspapers in New Jersey and
one in Pennsylvania, The Associated Press reports.
Newhouse's purchase from Denver-based MediaNews Group Inc. makes
Advance Publications owner of six of New Jersey's 18 daily newspapers.
Penn Jersey Advance Inc., a subsidiary of Advance Publications, bought
The Gloucester County Times in Woodbury, Today's
Sunbeam in Salem, and the Bridgeton News.
Advance already publishes The Jersey Journal in Jersey City,
The Star-Ledger in Newark, and The Times in Trenton.
These three papers have a combined circulation of 530,371 on weekdays,
according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.
Yesterday's purchase increases Advance's weekday circulation in New
Jersey by almost 50,000. The acquisition of The Express-Times in
Easton, Pa., adds another 50,000-circulation daily to Advance's regional
holdings.
Forty weekly newspapers in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania were
included in the deal. The purchase price was not disclosed.
MediaNews said it would use proceeds of the sales in markets that had a
better strategic fit.
