As news towns go, Syracuse, N.Y., isn't huge or bustling: Its population of 145,000 makes it equal in size to the modest Chicago suburb of Naperville, Ill.

But does it matter? No question. With its storied newspaper shifts to a digital-first format, Syracuse is garnering more attention than some media markets 10 times its size.
