By: E&P Staff Advance Publications may be interested in purchasing the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal, one of the 12 Knight Ridder papers McClatchy plans to divest.
The Beacon Journal's Mary Ethridge reported today that managers from Advance's Plain Dealer in Cleveland met with Beacon Journal executives on Wednesday and Thursday.
Beacon Journal Publisher Jim Crutchfield declined to comment. Newly appointed Plain Dealer Publisher Terrance C. Z. Egger (who just left the St. Louis Post-Dispatch) did not return calls from the Beacon Journal seeking comment.
McClatchy has already struck a complicated deal to sell four of the 12 papers. MediaNews Group plans to buy the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News, the Contra Costa (Calif.) Times, The Monterey County (Calif.) Herald, and the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press.
The deadline for bids for The Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News passed earlier this week and reportedly several parties, including New York Daily News owner Mortimer Zuckerman, and Brian Tierney, a public relations executive, submitted bids.
