By: E&P Staff A Reuters photographer who was held without charges by the U.S. military in Iraq was freed Wednesday, the wire service reported.
Ibrahim Jassam Mohammed was a freelance television cameraman and still photographer working for Reuters when he was snatched from his home in September 2008 by U.S. and Iraqi mililtary personnel. He was held in a prison camp near the Kuwait-Iraq border at first and later transferred to the Camp Cropper detention center near Baghdad airport.
The military has never said why he was arrested and detained.
"How can I describe my feelings? This is like being born again," Jassam told Reuters by telephone.
"I am very pleased his long incarceration without charge is finally over," Reuters Editor-in-Chief David Schlesinger said told the wire service in an article by Suadad al-Salhy. "I wish the process to release a man who had no specific accusations against him had been swifter."
Reuters said the U.S. military did not immediately repond to e-mails seeking comment on his release.
